Boosting the fight against crime with advanced biometrics

Norwegian Police Service
| minute read

Background

The overall mission of the Norwegian Police Service is to protect citizens, prevent crime, and identify and stop criminal activity. It collaborates closely with the country’s courts and correctional services, as well as with international police agencies and databases, such as Eurodac.

The challenge

Norwegian Police sought to modernise and improve its old system for fingerprint identification. It’s new automated fingerprint identification system (AFIS) needed to deliver faster and better searches through simplified and automated processes.

The solution

Drawing on a deep understanding of new and emerging multi-biometric identification capabilities (face and fingerprint recognition), we developed a solution aligning perfectly with the Norwegian Police Service’s digital strategy. Based on open technology, such as .Net and open database (MSSQL), our solution automates fingerprint transmission to a central database, fingerprint identification and facial recognition. Crucially, the solution seamlessly integrates with the Norwegian Police Service’s other systems.

The results

Working in partnership with the Norwegian Police Service, we were able to deliver:

  • An intuitive user interface that’s easy to use
  • Better search algorithms and much faster search times
  • An agile solution that offers easy integration with new services (e.g. Passports and ID- ards)
  • Direct access to Sopra Steria biometrics experts when desired
