London, 31 July 2023 - Sopra Steria, a leading digital transformation provider, has worked in partnership with Transport for London (TfL) to develop new software to upgrade TfL's incident management system.
TfL is responsible for managing 580km of London’s busiest roads, including all of the capital’s 6,400 traffic signal junctions. The new system means incidents across its vast network can be quickly identified and resolved to keep traffic moving safely, providing a single, unified view of London’s roads for the first time.
The innovative software generates rapid alerts for TfL by analysing large volumes of data on factors like road accidents, traffic congestion and roadworks. This ensures that vital information on incidents is quickly delivered to organisations that rely on up-to-date and accurate traffic reports, such as local authorities and emergency services across the capital.
As a result, this helps enable TfL to detect and respond to incidents efficiently, helping to improve road safety and minimise pollution and congestion across the city.
The new system is also invaluable for effectively managing London’s road network during exceptionally busy periods, such as large-scale events that attract a high number of visitors to the capital. Since go-live it has already been deployed for the London Marathon and the King’s Coronation.
As part of a four-year programme, Sopra Steria and TfL have worked together closely – adopting an innovative Agile approach to software development and project management – to design the new world-leading system.
The partnership is part of a wider digital transformation journey, as TfL looks to future-proof the capital in line with ongoing advancements and innovations in smart technology.
Irfan Shaffi, Operational Control Manager at TfL, said:
“The transformative system produced from our work with Sopra Steria will enable TfL to manage our surface transport network much more effectively, and gives us a vital tool to keep London moving. This project within TfL’s wider Surface Intelligent Transport Systems (SITS) programme, in combination with the other technology tools in development, gives us excellent situational awareness and facilitates the strong green heartbeat needed to deliver upon the Mayor’s Transport Strategy.”
Adrian Fieldhouse, Managing Director, Government and Transport at Sopra Steria, said:
“We’re extremely proud to partner with Transport for London to launch such a transformative system, which will help keep visitors and residents safe across the city’s road network. From the outset we worked together as one team with the shared goal of improving the lives of Londoners – a truly collaborative approach that has led to a system that will improve the lives of millions of road users in the capital.
“The development of a highly scalable and flexible transport solution will also prove invaluable as new technologies continue to emerge – future-proofing London’s traffic system for years to come.”
